Who we are

We are a team of dental professionals who are dedicated to helping patients who are nervous of dental treatment. Over the years, we have helped many patients overcome their fears and anxiety.

We try very hard to make sure that you are comfortable and relaxed and we really do sympathise.

What is your job at Gentle Dental?

I’m the Principal dentist at the practice.

What made you start a job in dentistry?

My dad was a dentist and we kids used to assist him when he needed to see emergency cases. It captured my empathic side. I really enjoy doing dentistry and helping people with their oral health. I owned a large practice in the UK called Carisbrook Dental Care. Through growing that practice, I realised it’s fun getting to know people and their families. I particularly like working with people who are nervous of treatment, to help them overcome their fears, as well cosmetic dentistry and rebuilding broken down mouths.

How long have you been qualified?

I qualified in Liverpool in the UK in 1986.  A lot had changed since then and I’m not just talking about the fashions!

How long have you lived in Nelson?

After selling the UK practice in 2007, I moved here with my wife and our daughter Annabel who was 7.  We wanted a better and more family-focused life...we certainly got that when our 2nd daughter Joelle was born 9 months later!

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Dentistry is my hobby as well as my job, but I also enjoy spending time with the family.  We love tramping in Abel Tasman National Park and fly fishing (although I'm not very good at it).

If you were a super hero, what power would you have?

The power to let people eat lollies without damaging their teeth!  No seriously, I think it would be great to be able to fly.

What is your job at Gentle Dental?

I am one of the dentists.  Primarily, my job is improving the health and well being of our patients, while keeping them involved in their care.

What made you start a job in dentistry?

I spotted the lifestyle of the Royal Navy dentists in Gibralter.  Tropical routine meant stopping work at lunch and going to the beach in the afternoon (I wish!).

How long have you been qualified?

Long enough to call myself very experienced ;)

Why did you move to Nelson?

I first came here in 1995.  I have been talking about it ever since.  An opportunity came up to make a change in 2019.  Covid delayed but we got here!

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Biking, hiking, sailing, skiing.  It might be time to try paddle boarding and kayaking.

If you were a super hero what power would you have?

'Magic wand' dentistry, where your wishes come true!

Oral Health Therapist

What made you start a job in dentistry?

It's a cliche, I know, but I have always wanted to. Once I saw what a huge difference it can make to a person's self esteem and wellbeing, it solidified it for me.

What made you move to Nelson?

Wanting to stop being vitamin D deficient, having lived in Dunedin for 6 years!

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Looking for new places in Nelson to eat at! So don't forget to let me know your favourites when you come in!

If you were a super hero what power would you have?

Telekinesis - to give my hands a break.  And who doesn't want to move things with their mind?!
